Job Title: INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE - SPECIAL EDUCATION I Range 13

INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE SPECIAL EDUCATION II Range 14

Position Purpose:

To assist a certificated teacher(s) in the instruction, supervision and training of individual or groups of special education or multiple categorical students by performing a variety of instructional support activities. Employees in the classification receive direct to general supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures. This job class provides instructional support activities to enhance the educational environment within assigned special education classroom. This job class requires a high degree of positive contact with assigned special education students and certificated staff.

Essential Job Duties:

The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

1. Assists certificated teacher in operating a classroom/learning program for a group of special education students.

2. Instructs/tutors assigned special education or multiple categorical students in basic academic language and/or specialized subject areas related to level of achievement; presents lessons, reinforces concepts, listens to students read, answers questions, assigns work, checks work for completeness and accuracy, etc.

3. Confers with teacher(s) regarding level/need of assigned students; plans daily activities and/or lessons for students as assigned; selects materials to be used and implements planned lessons.

4. Supervises and/or assists in the supervision of students to maintain effective learning and/or safe play/recreational environments, noting behavioral and other problems observed and disciplining/reporting when necessary; supervises students in the classroom in absence of teacher as assigned.

5. Assists in organizing learning and/or instructional environment; setting up materials for daily activities and maintaining neat, orderly classroom/instructional areas.

6. Prepares, researches and assists in the development of, and/or selects instructional materials and equipment for use in classroom activities.

7. Provides teacher(s) with relevant feedback and information on student's progress through observation, daily contact and maintaining accurate student progress records.

8. Administers, checks/corrects and records standardized, level, unit and other classroom tests, daily assignments and homework.

9. Establishes and maintains informational and operational records and files such as pupil profile cards, lesson plans, behavior management points, grades, report cards, attendance records, etc.

10. Takes and records attendance for assigned class; records tardies; follows up on absences.

11. Monitors and assists students while using equipment including computer terminals, cassette recorders; sets up equipment, selects appropriate materials to be used and maintains accurate records of work completed.

12. Maintains classroom supplies; orders classroom supplies and books as assigned.

13. Operates a variety of office and audio visual machines and equipment including typewriter, copier, computer and printer, film projector, tape recorder, VCR, record player.

14. Performs a variety of clerical duties as assigned; types work papers memos and notes; files papers and cum folder information; duplicates a variety of work papers, notes, etc.

15. May perform yard, cafeteria and bus duty functions as designated in the Yard Duty Aide job description.

16. Assist and train student in the maintenance of personal needs including feeding, combing hair and dressing appropriately.

17. Performs related duties as required.

In addition to the above \"Essential Job Duties\" an Instructional Aide, Special Education II will be responsible for the following:

* Provide physical assistance to students who cannot care for themselves including feeding, diapering, turning and physical movement.

* Perform the following specialized health care procedures as needed:

(a) Gastrostomy tube feeding (tube to syringe method).

(b) Gastrostomy tube feeding (slow drip method).

(c) Measure and administer medications via oral, rectal, and gastrostomy tube routes.

(d) Suctioning (oro-nasal).

(e) Nebulizer (breathing treatments).

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

Knowledge of:

* Proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.

* General needs and behaviors of students.

* Pertinent academic areas and learning situations.

Skill and Ability to:

* Demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing and mathematical skills sufficient to obtain a passing score on a standardized proficiency test as designated by the District.

* Obtain a valid First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate within the time required by the District.

* NCLB Compliance Possess one of the following:

* AA Degree or higher from an accredited college or;

* Complete two years of full time college (equivalent to 48 semester units); or,

* Pass the Local Assessment Test for Instructional Paraprofessional NCLB Compliance.

* Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.

* Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions.

* Understand the needs of assigned students and to effectively relate to these needs in a learning/recreational situation.

* Maintain a firm but patient and courteous attitude toward students.

* Effectively supervise students in a variety of situations.

* Establish and maintain accurate records and files.

* Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

* Operate standard office and instructional equipment as appropriate to area of assignment including copy machine, ditto machine, thermofax, tape recorder, audiovisual equipment, computer terminal, printer and related software, etc.

* Exercise tact, diplomacy and good judgment in dealing with students.

* Maintain the security and confidentiality of specified records and information.

* Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: graduation from high school.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

In order to perform this job successfully an individual must meet the physical requirements necessary to complete the essential job duties. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job duties.

* Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.

* Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.

* Perform lifting, pushing and/or pulling which does not exceed 50 pounds and is an infrequent aspect of the job.

* Is subject to inside environmental conditions.

* May be required to work with harsh and toxic substances.

* May be required to work around foul odors.

* May be required to work around loud noise.

* Follow Universal Precautions as outlined by OSHA guidelines and established District policies.

* Special handling of all body fluids and blood products.
